Dow Jones Today: Verizon, Boeing Lead Blue Chip Rally

An intraday gain of more than 1% for the Nasdaq composite faded badly Tuesday morning, but buyers pushed major stock indexes near session highs with about an hour left to go in the session. In the Dow Jones today, Verizon (VZ) stock and Boeing (BA) stock outperformed. Strong performers in the Nasdaq 100 included Monster Beverage (MNST) and Activision Blizzard (ATVI).

The Dow Jones, S&P 500 and Nasdaq were all up around 1%. Volume on the NYSE was tracking slightly higher than Monday. Nasdaq volume was slightly lower. (For updates on this story and other market coverage, visit the Stock Market Today page.)

In the stock market today, Union Pacific (UNP) led a rally in railroad stocks, while semiconductor stocks and financials lagged.

Shares of Union Pacific gapped up and rose nearly 9% after industry veteran Jim Vena, formerly of Canadian Pacific Railway (CNP), was named chief operating officer.

Dow Jones Today: Gainers

Shares of Verizon jumped nearly 3% and reclaimed the 50-day moving average after the company said it added 650,000 net new phone subscribers who pay a monthly bill in the fourth quarter.

Boeing, meanwhile, added 3.5% in the Dow Jones today after the company said it delivered 69 of its 737 airplanes last month. Deliveries in 2018 totaled 806, a record for the company.

Dow Jones Today: Decliners

Goldman Sachs (GS)and JPMorgan (JPM) lagged in the Dow Jones today with losses of around 1% as the 10-year Treasury yield held steady around 2.71%.

Elsewhere, Monster Beverage jumped 5.5% to 52.50 after SunTrust Robinson Humphrey upgraded shares to buy from hold and lifted its price target to 65 from 50, citing compelling valuation.

Kirkland Lake Gold (KL) was a top gainer in the MarketSmithGrowth 250. Shares were up nearly 4% to 25.86. It's been respecting the 25 level after a breakout from a base with a 23.96 buy point.

SPDR Gold Shares (GLD), which tracks the price of gold bullion, eased 0.3%. Gold was recently trading around $1,286 an ounce.

IBD 50 Movers

In other stock market news, fast-growing retailer Five Below (FIVE) broke out over a trend line, rising 4%. Wingstop (WING), featured in Monday's IBD 50 Stocks To Watch column, extended gains after soaring 7.5% Monday. Shares were up another 2.5% to 69.19 as it works on a base with a 72.10 entry.
